Bee Pests and Diseases Workshop

Presented by VAA Melbourne Section.

The workshop is aimed at informing beekeepers, particularly recreational/hobby  beekeepers how to prevent, detect and treat bee pests and diseases.


• Sunday 30th November 2014
• 9.00am to 4.00pm
• Registration from 8:30 am


Veterinary Research Institute,
The University of Melbourne,
corner Flemington Rd and Park Drive,
Parkville, Vic.

Enter via metal gates and follow signs,  Melway map 2A, grid K6
or Tram stop 15 on routes 55 and 59


There will be no charge to attend the workshop (thanks to the University of Melbourne & Presenters for not charging).

However, there will be a charge of $5 for refreshments (including morning tea) and $10 for a BBQ lunch. Participants can, if they wish, bring their own lunch.

Payments will be collected on the day of the workshop from 8:30am during registration.

Program Outline

• Overview of bee pests and diseases
• Personal accounts of beekeepers’ experiences with bee pests and diseases
• Dealing with bee pests and diseases, particularly in an urban environment
- Identification
- Prevention
- Treatment and notification
• References relating to bee pests and diseases
• How recreational beekeepers can assist with bee biosecurity
• Demonstration at an actual hive (weather permitting) of how to
- inspect it for bee pests and diseases
- requeen it as a means of disease prevention
• Opportunity to ask individual questions from experienced beekeepers

Presenters will include:
• Victorian DEPI apicultural officers
• Experienced beekeepers
• Research scientists

- whether or not you will be paying $10 for the BBQ lunch and/or the $5 for refreshments.

As it is anticipated that there will be a high demand for this workshop and available space is limited, not all applicants may be able to attend. Note that successful applicants will be expected to attend all sessions.  Applications will be accepted in the order that they are received. Both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified.
